Easy summer dessert recipe: Red, white, and blue Berry Trifle

A beautiful, yummy, and easy 4th of July recipe everyone will love!

Looking for the perfect easy July 4th dessert to bring to your Independence Day celebration?

This Red, White & Blue Berry Trifle is a festive, crowd-pleasing dessert layered with fluffy angel food cake, fresh strawberries, juicy blueberries, creamy whipped topping, and a sprinkle of graham cracker crumbs. It’s a beautiful patriotic dessert recipe that’s incredibly simple to make, requires minimal prep, and is always one of the first desserts to disappear at summer cookouts.

Ingredients

  • 2 cartons fresh strawberries, washed, and chopped (reserve a few whole berries for garnish)

  • 1 large carton fresh blueberries, washed and dried

  • 1 angel food cake, baked according to package directions (or 1 store-bought angel food cake), cut into bite-sized cubes

  • 2 (16-ounce) tub Cool Whip, thawed

  • 1 package graham crackers, crushed into crumbs

  • Glass trifle bowl or large clear glass serving bowl

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients. Wash and thoroughly dry the strawberries and blueberries. Chop the strawberries into bite-sized pieces, reserving a few whole berries for decorating the top.

  • If baking your own angel food cake, allow it to cool completely before cutting it into cubes. If using store-bought cake, simply cut it into bite-sized pieces.

  • Step 2: Assemble the Trifle. Begin by spreading a layer of Cool Whip across the bottom of your trifle dish.

  • Sprinkle on a layer of strawberries and blueberries, followed by a layer of angel food cake cubes. Finish with a light sprinkle of crushed graham crackers.

  • Repeat the layers: Cool Whip, berries, cake, and graham cracker crumbs until your trifle dish is full.

  • Step 3: Decorate

  • Finish with a generous layer of Cool Whip and decorate the top with fresh strawberries and blueberries for a festive red, white, and blue presentation.

For the best flavor, refrigerate for at least one hour before serving to allow the layers to come together.

Notes

Make this dessert up to one day in advance for an easy entertaining option.

Store covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Fresh, ripe berries make all the difference, so choose the sweetest strawberries you can find.

A clear glass trifle bowl beautifully showcases all of the patriotic layers, making this dessert as pretty as it is delicious.

This berry trifle has become one of my favorite summer entertaining desserts because it’s effortless to make, feeds a crowd, and always looks beautiful on a summer dessert table. Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, celebrating the Fourth of July, or attending a summer potluck, this classic red, white, and blue dessert is guaranteed to be a hit and looks like a lot more effort than it is!
